Google Workspace Blocked a Gmail App? Admin Checklist
Confirm the selected Google account and exact error. A normal consent page is a user decision. An admin_policy_enforced error is a Workspace policy decision that only the administrator can review.
If Google Workspace blocked a Gmail-connected app, copy the exact error and confirm the selected Google account. A normal consent page is not an administrator block. The admin_policy_enforced error means Workspace policy prevents authorization of requested scopes. Only your administrator can review it. Do not bypass the decision with personal Gmail, mail forwarding, or warning-screen workarounds.
You can try the MagicLess demo without connecting an inbox while you wait. The demo shows the login-code workflow, but it cannot test or override your organization's Google Workspace rules.
Identify the exact error
Use the text on Google's page, not a general report that the app is "not working."
| What you see | What it means | Safe next step |
|---|---|---|
| An account chooser | More than one Google account is available. | Select the work account that owns the Gmail inbox you need. |
| A consent page with requested access | Google is asking you to decide whether to grant the listed permissions. | Read the app name and permissions. Continue only if both are expected. |
| An "unverified app" warning | The app's verification state needs attention. | Ask the provider or administrator to confirm the app. Do not bypass the warning. |
| admin_policy_enforced or an administrator-block message | Workspace policy blocks at least one requested scope for this account. | Send your administrator the checklist below. |
| The app connects, but a code does not arrive | Authorization succeeded. The issue is now mail delivery or routing. | Use the work-email delivery checklist. |
Reinstalling the extension or requesting another login code does not change an administrator policy.
Check the selected Google account
Google lets a browser hold several accounts with separate settings. The first account signed in can become the default.
- Read the complete address on the Google account chooser.
- Select the managed work or school account that owns the Gmail inbox.
- If you selected the wrong account, cancel and start the connection again.
- Record the result after you select the correct account.
Do not connect personal Gmail to work around a work-account restriction. That changes the mailbox and can move login mail outside your organization's controls.
What should you send your administrator?
Send one complete request. Remove login codes, access tokens, message content, and other secrets from screenshots.
- App name and official website or store listing.
- Work email address that you selected.
- Exact error text, date, time, and time zone.
- Redacted screenshot of the Google error page.
- Business task and team or organizational unit that needs access.
- Requested Google services or scopes, if shown. Do not guess.
- OAuth client ID, if the provider supplies it. Do not copy one from another app.
- Request for the narrowest access that supports the task, not blanket trust.
Ask for a review, not guaranteed approval. Your administrator can deny the request if it does not meet policy.
What the administrator can review
In Google Admin console, an administrator with the required privilege can open Security > Access and data control > API controls > Manage App Access. This view can show the OAuth client ID, ownership, verification status, privacy and support information, requested services and scopes, access level, and organizational units.
Google offers Limited, Specific Google data, Trusted, and Blocked settings. Specific Google data can allow selected scopes. Ask about this least-privilege option, but let the administrator decide whether it fits the app and policy.
Some organizations enable requests for unconfigured apps under Apps pending review. This flow does not apply when a configured app requests a service it cannot use. If no request button appears, contact IT.
Gmail scopes describe the requested data and access level. Apps should request the narrowest scope needed. Do not name an exact scope, such as gmail.readonly, unless the consent screen, provider, or administrator view confirms it.
Illustrative example
Illustrative example, reviewed October 22, 2026; not a customer case: Mina has personal Gmail and a company account open in Chrome. Personal Gmail shows consent. The company account shows admin_policy_enforced.
Mina does not forward company mail to personal Gmail. She sends IT the app name, company address, exact error, timestamp, redacted screenshot, business task, and available client or scope details. IT can approve, limit, or deny the app for Mina's organizational unit.
Where MagicLess fits
MagicLess checks connected Gmail inboxes on supported Chrome login pages. With auto-detection enabled, a recognized login page can trigger a lookup. You can also start one with its button or shortcut. You choose whether to fill the result. It does not read Outlook or SMS, poll Gmail continuously, bypass Workspace policy, or submit forms. Check compatibility and the OTP extension installation guide before you request access.
FAQ
What does admin_policy_enforced mean?
The selected Workspace account cannot authorize one or more requested scopes because of an administrator policy. The user cannot remove that policy.
Is a Google consent page an administrator block?
No. It asks you to review and accept or reject requested access. Check the account, app name, and permissions before you decide.
Can a Chrome extension bypass a Workspace policy?
No. Reinstalling, changing Chrome settings, or using an extension cannot grant Gmail OAuth access that Workspace policy blocks.
Why is there no "request access" button?
The administrator can disable user requests. Google also says this flow is for unconfigured apps. A configured app that lacks permission for a service can block the user without offering it.
What if authorization works but no code appears?
Treat that as a separate delivery or matching issue. Check the recipient, aliases, filters, administrator mail rules, and newest message. The OAuth block is no longer active.
